Summertime

Summer is super busy for me. This summer has taken busy to a whole new level. I’ll have 3-5 days of things back to back to back and then a couple days of completely nothing. I’m really liking that! It just fits me so perfectly.

I’m trying not to look at the date on my last published blog post. June has faded and July has come in with a big awesome bang.

I went to Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana with my people around the middle of June. It was so much fun! If you are ever near there during the summer, definitely go.

I did some business training for my friend Alli Worthington at the end of June. I’m her intern! It’s just the begining and it’s already been a blast! I’ve learned tons, too. [Someday I want to be awesome like her and have interns.]

The 4th of July weekend came and the celebrations and fireworks carried on well into Tuesday. It’s probably my favorite holiday and to see all my favorite people and meet some fabulous new ones was just outstanding!

In between all that, I judged the 4H photography division at the Western Kentucky State Fair, and I’m sure there are some little random events wedged in between there that I’m forgetting. I’m also doing a children’s shoot at the fair tonight, which I’m totally stoked about! Be on the lookout for those images to pop up here.

Saturday in iPhone Pictures

I love taking pictures with my iPhone as much as I do my regular camera. My regular camera takes pretty, polished pictures of photo shoots with clients as well as family. My iPhone, however,  I love at least as much. It is my go to camera for a lot of personal memories. With it, I don’t feel obligated to do normal processing procedures like I would with a client.

I snapped this self portrait right before I ran out the door with my two sisters and mom to do errands. The twins (3yo) had left earlier to “help” dad on the job site because they like to feel important and “do work like daddy does”. I want to remember these days – the days of busyness, toddler brothers, sometimes no make-up, sister laughs and how we learn to pull together when things get hard.

I took this photo on a rainy October Sunday when we were going to see our friends. This is one of my favorite places in the whole world – right around Pilot Rock. It’s so pretty with all the tobacco barns, fields, cows and all the Kentucky-ness.

This was snapped at Sonic back in the summer, probably July. It was happy hour and mom and I went to grab everyone a drink. Our summer picks were: the cranberry slushy, cranberry limeade, vanilla coke, regular coke, lemon slushy and lemon berry slushy.

This photo was taken at some random shoe store. I loved those heels with the ruffle on them, but never got them. I’m not a shoe-a-holic.

I want to remember these days.

P.S. Apple nor Sonic has any idea I posted this. I just like their stuff. Over and out.

Summertime. Large Families. Life.

These pictures are proof that the best camera is always the one you have with you. In this case, it was my iPhone. It’s not the greatest quality- kinda fuzzy. It’s the memories that count, though. It’s one of the top reasons I am a photographer. When my future children look back on these pictures, they won’t notice the quality saying “Man! That’s a really cruddy picture!”

So, that being said… These are the pictures from this summer- Braboy Summer 2010. I’m so thankful.

Sleepy Babies

Napping babes. Pink little cheeks. Light summer blankets. Creamy sheets. Cool pillows.

Cranberry Lemonade

Ice cold cranberry lemonade. Frosted Mason jars.

Blueberry Pancake

My sister Alli and I making blueberry pancakes for lunch. The hot sizzle of the griddle. The muscle woman you have to be to lift the heavy thing.

Meredith Andrews Makes a Nice Lullaby

Listening to Meredith Andrews in the dark. The babies eyes that close shut as soon as we cross the Tennessee-Kentucky line. The soft orange glow of the Tundra’s stereo system.

Goofing of in Old Navy

Goofing off in Old Navy.

4th of July Old Navy Shirt

Flag shirts bought just hours before a party with our friends. (Hi R’s! Hi C‘s!) Fireworks. Mudding on ATV’s with our friends. Muddy, sweaty children. The soft smell of hay in the barn. The sound of all the ATV’s starting.

Vegetable Chips

Vegetable chip-eating children.

Tractor Pulls, Baby!

Tractor pulls with friends that may as well be family. Smoke in the air. Hot dogs. Squirmy little children. [Yes, cotton candy kind of took charge there at the end.]

That’s part 1 because, yes, I just needed to publish the draft already. [Raise your hand if you are the queen/king of drafts!]

Over and out.

Freezing Fruit

Freezing is a great way to keep fruit! About once, maybe twice, a summer Strawberries will go down to about .99¢ a carton. (Price will vary from area to area. Just try to find the lowest price.) When they go down like that we buy a whole bunch, wash them, pull the leaves off, and freeze them. To prevent them from freezing in clumps, put them on a wax paper-lined cookie sheet. Then put them into freezer bags.

You can use this method with all sorts of berries and fruit! In our area, it is cheeper to do this than to buy them already frozen. I don’t know about you, but my family can eat some fruit! You can use this method whether you buy the fruit from a store, pick them yourself, or grow and pick yourself.

My family and I are also trying to eat a bit healthier. For sweeteners, we try our best to use Agave nectar and raw honey instead of white sugar. We do like us some ice cream, though. We have found a nice alternative for that- smoothies. I don’t mean thin smoothies, though. I mean thick like ice cream. The secret to getting a very thick, ice cream-like smoothie is not blending too much. Here’s the {not so} secret recipe.

Ice Cream Strawberry Smoothies

Ingredients:

about 2 – 2 1/4 cups of frozen solid strawberries

about 1 – 1 1/2 cups of plain yogurt

sweetener to taste

—–

Quickly chop the frozen strawberries in a blender. Add the yogurt and sweetener. Blend very quickly. Pour into glasses and serve immediately.

Recipe notes: If you aren’t going to serve this immediately, put the smoothie glasses in the freezer. You can leave them there as long as they don’t freeze solid. You can also add a Banana or two. The key to thickness is being very quick!

If you have any tips on keeping fruit or any favorite recipes, I’d love to hear about them in the comments! Enjoy~
