Soul Expressed in Art

One thing about being a photographer, an artist who likes to paint her pictures with pixels and explosions of shimmery light, is that it has given me a window into beauty that I might not have ever come close to touching before. It’s unveiled Photoshop misuse and Photoshop that induces even more shivers down your spine because it just feels so real and raw – somebody’s soul expressed in art.

When We All Win

Mums

It’s been a little while since I’ve written something to float all over the Internet. There have been more private chats and I’ve let things happen as they please… Not so scheduled. Not so hard on myself. Priorities are arranging themselves more naturally and it just feels good. It’s a process. But in all that, things have been stirring and I just don’t know how to form the words and sentences for them yet, but other people have.

The True Value of A Moment

Oh hai!

“Sometimes, you’ll never know the true value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” -Unknown

A Wednesday List

Going Out

1. I went out Friday night with my family to a restaurant I’ve gone to since I was a little girl. I always seem to get burgers that are bigger than my mouth.

2. I need to mop and put away dishes after I’m done here.

3. You probably didn’t want to know that.

Eggs!

4. I have laying hens in my backyard. Those 3.5 dozen eggs are courtesy of them.

Sonic

5. Lemon slushies from Sonic remind me of summer.

[BlissDom] Headshots

It’s almost BlissDom time, Alli just had 1000 pounds of Hershey’s Bliss chocolate delivered to her house, and it’s all coming to life. You want to be there. It’s going to be fabulous!

I will be offering free headshots for BlissDom attendees and staff. They will be taken on Saturday (29th) in the Delta area at 9:30am. I’d love to see your beautiful face there! If you plan on getting a headshot, please comment on this post. I have room for 20 people max, and I currently have 8 spots left.

P.S. Special thanks to Borrow Lenses for loaning me the 35mm f/1.8 for these headshots! Y’all are going to look fabulous and that lens is going to be like butter.

Project 365 Day 1

Peanut Butter M&M’s put a little dash of sunshine in any type of day.

P.S. You can read more about Project 365 and how it works here

P.P.S. I was really planning to use my ‘real’ camera, but my SD card is broken and I must order new ones. Therefore, I will be using my iPhone camera until it comes in. Forgive me?

Photo Prop Inspiration

Chalkboard Speech Bubble at the Photojojo Store!

Isn’t that just the cutest thing you’ve ever seen? I think it would look fabulous incorporated into an engagement, family, or children’s session.

If you had this cute little chalkboard speech bubble, what type(s) of sessions would you use it in? How?

Photography Tutorials: White Balance {Nikon}

The other day I posted about where I get my inspiration from and how I edit. If you noticed in the comments, Jenn posted the following comment wanting to know more about white balance. I’m sure that she’s not alone.

White balance is super easy! See? I’ll show you. (In crappy iPhone pictures, because I don’t own two snazzy big girl cameras.) This is a Nikon tutorial, by the way. Canon is probably very similar, but I know it can be confusing. I might have one of my Canon friends come in and guest post for y’all on that. ;)

White Balance Button

Pretty simple step, no?

Turn the Wheel

As a note, you’ll turn this wheel while holding the white balance button (pictured before).

Look at the Screen

See that little cloud in the box that the arrow is pointing to? This is the icon that tells you what lighting your camera is set to set the white balance for. (Did that make any sense?) Different white balance settings are represented by different icons. You can see photo examples of that here on the Ree’s blog.

Was that clear as mud or what? Feel free to post any questions you have about white balance or photography in general in the comments below. I’ll be more than happy to chat with you! :)

FAQ: Inspiration + Editing

Right now, I’m sitting at my kitchen table feeling overwhelmed, flooding my brain with Meredith Andrews and “Breathe, Hannah. Breathe.”s. Just keeping it real. Anyway…

Today’s FAQ will be on where I get my inspiration from and editing the photos. I’ve been asked these two questions multiple times, but I don’t want to keep it all about me and my answers. I want to here where you, as photographers, get your inspiration from and what you use for editing and your editing process too! Tell me how you express your brand through your photos!

I get my inspiration from multiple places. As far as poses go, I look at other photographers’ work on blogs and in magazines. There are some seriously creative people out there- you! For color, pattern, and texture inspiration, I look on fashion blogs, clothing sites, boutiques, Etsy, and the Martha Stewart magazines. There are also little things I run across in day-t0-day life that I think would be neat to incorporate somehow like Jones’ Pure Cane Soda bottles, the dark chocolate color that is our nativity brought back from Africa, and cute pieces of clothing and accessories.

I try to make how I edit part of who I am as a photographer. I like my photos to have lots of natural lighting, nice white balance, perfectly exposed (even though I still can’t nail it perfectly) and sometimes a little over exposed, a nice color pop, accurate display of the emotion, and to have the subject’s personality very accurately displayed. It’s very lifestyle. That’s just part of my style. For that reason, I just adore Adobe Lightroom.

I know photographers have completely different style than that. My friend Natalie takes gorgeous photos. I love her work. However, you can just tell by looking at her photos that her style is a bit different than mine. That’s okay. It’s what helps set us apart as photographers. (<3 you, Natalie!)

What sets you apart as a photographer? How do you display that throughout your business? What inspires you and what do you use for editing?

P.S. Adobe has no clue who I am, nor did they sponsor this post in any way. If I fell of the face of the earth tomorrow, Adobe would have no clue. (But the blogosphere would, because then I wouldn’t be tweeting. Heh.)
