Alyssa + Nicolas – Hopkinsville, KY Children’s Photographer

This shoot was one of the most fun I’ve probably ever done! We did it at the Western Kentucky State Fair and I’ve been dreaming up a shoot to do there for forever! This was it and it turned out just like I wanted.

I’ve been aching to get these two shots since the first spark of inspiration in February. It’s one of the shots that reminds me of summer and of my home town. I just love it.

This girl was pretty much fabulous! One reason I love photographing older girls is that that they practice poses in front of the mirror at home practically everyday, so when we go to shoot, they are overflowing with ideas and are pretty much naturals! Alyssa was no exception.

This little dude flat out loved my camera! He he can go from the silliest things I could come up with to the most serious.

Here’s one thing about Alyssa: She’s totally not afraid to do things with her little brother, but she’s definitely going to put her own twist on things. I love that!

Nicolas was ripping off and shoving enormous hunks of  blue cotton candy into his mouth, while Alyssa, on the other hand, was pinching off little pieces of her pink cotton candy.

See what I mean about him being able to pull off a totally serious look?

They were both total troopers throughout the whole shoot! July in this part of the south gets a little intense sometimes, but they didn’t seem to mind at all. Alyssa + Nicolas- Thanks for being so wonderful! I had so much fun with you guys! Becky + JD- Thanks for letting me work with your kids! You all are wonderful.

xoxo

Hannah Braboy - 12

Last Saturday I slung my camera bag around my shoulder and over my right hip. Saturdays are busy and that day was no exception. It was a little before 8am when I stepped out the door and the Kentucky summer air was already thick.

To say I loved shooting this would be an understatement. It was such an awesome day!

This is Warren. He was the driver for my dad’s company’s car.

He came in second place and did such a fabulous job!

These two best friends were sitting on the sidewalk beside where we were standing. They were completely adorable!

This is Randy. He’s the adorableness that is also in that image at the very top of this post!

He was hamming it up for the camera the entire time! I loved it! He was totally cracking up here!

I make it a point to never tell my subjects to “smile for the camera” or some other equally cheesy attempt to get someone to smile. This little dude seriously couldn’t stop smiling and looking cute, though!

It was just a really good day and awesome shoot! I never get tired of this.

Children’s Photography Tips

  1. Have a fast shutter speed. Little people move fast. They are constantly in motion and on the go. Slow just doesn’t cut it.
  2. Shoot in even, good lighting. See #1.
  3. Shoot in similar lighting situations. You won’t have time to change your settings much with the little guys.
  4. Use a telephoto lens that will let good light in. These little guys are fast. They get into all sorts of things, which means you as the photographer will have to be ready to capture that. I’ve found a telephoto will help with that.
  5. Get down on their level. I can’t stress this enough.
  6. Be quick on your toes. Soon, little toddler boy will be building houses instead of slobbering all over blocks. That precious, tiny little girl will grow up snapping the photos instead of being in front of them. You have to be on your toes to get the shot right and quick the first time.

Enjoyable.

A Poverty

It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish. ~Mother Teresa

Let the words sink deep. Breathe. Act. Let love grow.

We all have different things God has called us to do. I won’t tell you what I do is what you need to do. God has called me to love right where I am- Not be so snappy, to tell the bossy big sister in me to take a hike, to love those who others won’t. What about you?

Graphic Designer Turned Photographer

I am a creative; not a coder. I have no idea the amount of times I told myself that (Twittered and Facebooked it, too).  I was stubborn and kept my graphic design gig going. I didn’t listen to the signs coming from my family: “Hannah, you are always on that stinking computer!” “I really need your help with the Boybarians, Lou.” “Just 5 more minutes and I’ll be off here.”

Finally I realized, “Hannah, you used to be a girl living life and blogging about it. Now you are a girl blogging and blog designing living life and snapping photos in between.” That was a hard blow to take. Then came my best friend Darcy’s post Unsustainable. Both of us were experiencing the same thing and here I thought that I couldn’t tell her I had to stop this madness and unsustainable schedule.

We Skyped because that’s what two geeky friends do [when they live 2 states and many, many miles apart].

I cried because I didn’t want to quit.

She helped me realize that I am a photographer with graphic design dabbled in. Not the other way around.

She has helped me realize my priorities.

That being said, I am no longer a full time graphic and blog designer. I will still accept the occasional graphic design or blog design job and training on that subject, but no longer full time. I appreciate those of you who have hired me and/or helped me learn so much! It’s been such a pleasure.

My Frontier

I told myself I needed my friends’ beach vacation. And you know, I actually did, but not in the way I thought. I needed it to realize this is my frontier- home. This is my domain.

All of this is:

My Frontier

These gorgeous Boybarians of mine:

My beautiful, dear sisters. (They won’t let me get too many photos of them.)

My awesome parents, I am blessed to have. (No photo of them, either.)

All of that is mine. And I am so, so very grateful. Even though it’s not a beach vacation, it’s my life. I love it. No beach vacation needed.

Sweet Shot Tuesday: A Wine Glass & Wild Flowers

Wild Flowers

In my opinion, grass-stained, chubby fists full of wild flowers are better than roses on a special occasion. Stick ‘em down in a wine glass and you’ve got yourself a wonderful, beautiful memory.

The International Princess Project

Note: If you are under 18, please have your parent(s) with you when reading this post and visiting the links.

Have you heard of the International Princess Project? They advocate women enslaved in prostitution and restore the lives of those women. Their stories are broken. These women and their mission is beautiful. The reality of  the number of women and children enslaved in this is not beautiful.

You can help. You can pray. You can buy their Punjammies. You can donate.

This could be us. This isn’t a fictional story about some women and children half way around the globe. This is a reality for those women and us. The U.S. isn’t excluded. It isn’t pretty. It’s actually pretty gory. But that’s the reality of our world. Our world. Let that sink in.
