Vacation + Updates

This week I have been on vacation. It’s been much needed and fun! We’ve gone to Nashville, went hiking, stopped in Whole Foods for strawberries that tasted like candy, built a swing set, and tried new things.

I do need to run through some Photography Lessons and site updates before the new week starts, though.

  • We are going to back up a punt on the business side of the Photography Lessons. We’re going to read Rework by Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson* (instead of the business-focused posts). I think the knowledge and info in this book will good for everyone. However, you will still want to research the legal stuff on your own, because it varies from state to state.
  • Go ahead and get the book from your local library or buy it. You can either 1) read the book while you do the shooting assignments, or 2) read the book and then complete the shooting assignments. I’ll be posting the next assignment late next week, in order to allow some time for everyone to get their book.
  • My portfolio page is in the works, just in case you go there and it looks all wonky. It should be up and running again shortly. In the meantime, you can scroll through the archives or look at my Facebook page for photos.

Have a great weekend! xoxo

*This is my amazon affiliate link for the Rework book. It just means that if you buy it, Amazon throws a small percentage of the sale in my account.

Photography Lessons + Practice

Starting May 9, I will be posting regular photography assignments. I will be doing them along side everyone, too! The assignments will allow for hands-on experience right where you are, but also give everyone a community to come back to. It’s open to anyone, but I think it will be particularly helpful to anyone wanting to become a photographer.

We will focus on what we can do now to progress to where we want to be. I get it. Sometimes it can be frustrating because you know where you want to be, but don’t know how to get there. It seems daunting and it seems like you’re alone. We’re going to take this baby one bite at a time together.

Let’s start by introducing ourselves. I’ll go first and you can link up below. Don’t be afraid to show off who you really are!

Hi! I’m Hannah! There’s no real good word that describes me best besides ‘Hannah’. I’m a photographer, blogger, and marketing director for Latitude821. I started blogging in 2006 at a small blogging host. I have since been featured on Raising CEO Kids and nominated on award sites like the HSBA Post and the 2010 BlogLuxe Awards.  I love summer, turquoise, swimming, friends, and traveling. You can find me on Twitter as @Hannah_Braboy and on my Facebook page.

Your turn! (Quick note: Please insert your permalink into the linky.)

Site Announcements + Updates

hannah braboy
This Monday I will be introducing a new project of mine! I’m super pumped about it and I think it’s going to be really fun and helpful! So stay tuned! You can subscribe via email or RSS here, fan the Facebook page, and follow me on Twitter to get updates, if you haven’t already. [Good gravy. I talk a lot when I get excited.]

Now, on to the next announcement…

The site + blog won’t be splitting. I decided this because I just really like this set up better for where I am right now. It might evolve into something a little different as my business and brand do so, but for now I like this.

Fun, right?

Dear Emma

Dear Emma,

I just found out. It’s Good Friday, I’ve been with my very closest friends all day, gone skating, and found out some new kittens were just born. But I scrolled through Facebook on my iPhone and saw this status from your mama:

You were so loved and strong. I’ve never ugly cried this hard over someone I haven’t ever met. I have no words. I know that you have been such an incredible gift to this world. If I have little girls someday, I want them to be like you.

I want to remember this day. I want to remember how I was on a walk when I saw the news, how I put a Maroon 5 song on repeat while I soaked up your story and cried, and how it felt because memories of miracle babies and my seizures came flooding back.

Thank you for being such an inspiration to so many people. You are loved and so missed.

Lots of love,

Hannah

P.S. Someday when I get to heaven, could we go for ice cream?

P.P.S. You can find Emma’s story here.

Featured Non-Profit: Let’s Get People Working

[Screenshot of Let's Get People Working]

I was astounded when I stumbled across Let’s Get People Working! I love the sheer amount of generosity and love people truly have towards one another. This site is for people who need jobs and for people who have them. So Let’s Get People Working.

P.S. For all of you design junkies (like me), this site has a super clean, fabulous design that’s appealing and easy to navigate. Those are really important things to include in a design. The design was created by Nashville based web designer Robert Carothers. If you want to study good design like this, go study every detail of the Let’s Get People Working site and then buy The Smashing Book.

Disclaimers:

Let’s Get People Working doesn’t know I blogged about them, nor do any of their affiliations. I wasn’t compensated for this blog post. It’s just a local non-profit that I care about.

The Smashing Book doesn’t know I blogged about them either, nor do any of their affiliations. It’s just a really good design book that helped me a lot.

Content Survey 2011

I’m working on a project right now that I believe you guys will love! Before I go any further on it, I would like your input! If you have a second, would you mind filling out this really short survey? It’s only 3 questions. Simple. You can find it here.

Thanks. You all are so awesome.

A Tour Around the Site

I thought it was high time that my site reflect what I do. It had been looking much too like a personal blog, which is not the entire look I’m going for anymore. It’s not quite done, but I thought I’d give you a tour of the progress thus far.

The Header - This one is pretty obvious. I changed it to reflect my photography logo. I’m in love with the heart because every element of it’s design really reflects why I feel in love with photography in the first place. It brings me back to every first and reminds me to never quit loving the God who brought me here or the photography.

The Sidebar

  • The DreamHost button  - This is an affiliate link for DreamHost because I use, love, and recommend it *so* much. (That DreamHost link above and in the sidebar are both affiliate links.)
  • The donate button – There’s a whole post devoted to it here. Simply put, it’s to help me get to Blissdom ’11 (a women’s blog conference in Nashville, Tennessee) as one of the official event photographers.
  • My Twitter – I Tweet a bunch, so it’s a nice way to catch things that might not make the blog. Like nose rings. [I don't have one and I'm not thinking about getting one, FYI.]

The Navigation Bar

  • About – You can click on the “about” text and it will take you to the main about page. However, if you just hover over “about”, it will show a list of other pages like My Quirky Top 10, my Favorites (these are some of the cute products that my fabulous friends make), and Things I Love (just simple things in life, but some of my favorites nonetheless.
  • Portfolio – I’ve added some new shots and although it’s still in the works, I think it will be easier for everyone to find where it is now.
  • Info – This is the down low on sessions, like pricing, time, etc. It was a little hard to find before, so I moved it there.
  • Tumblr – This is where some of the links I like go. Check it out!
  • Twitter – This is just a link to my Twitter account. Follow me?

I think that’s just about it. I’ll try and keep you updated as the site changes. If you see anything that’s wonky, be sure to email me about it. That would be great!

Happy Saturday, friends!

I have four siblings.

‘Nuff said.

Look into these bad boys:

In an ideal world, we would all sleep in cocoon-like environments. We have an enduring fascination with built-in bed solutions. Here’s a roundup of architect-designed nocturnal niches:

Quite a few repeated themselves about the same subject — blogging. Apparently, some of you think I know how to blog daily while keeping a dust-free home and perfectly groomed children who love each other and never fight.

I have absolutely no idea how one does that. I’ll keep my eye out for the answer, but in the meantime, I I’ll compromise and answer the overarching blogging question, which basically asks, “How do I blog well?”

I don’t know everything about blogging. But I do know some things. Here are my best tips about blogging while still miraculously getting dinner on the table.
