What camera mode?

DSC_0076

What camera mode do you use? Are you afraid to get out of Auto? Are you a manual person? We can chat camera in the comments! No matter your camera type or skill level, bring it! If you have ever taken a picture, you are a photographer. No excuses! C’mon now! :)

P.S. I love me some bokeh (it’s all those pretty little “dots” up there in that photo). I even created a Flickr group dedicated to it. Add any photos to the group you have with bokeh in them between now (15th of June) and the 30th of June. I’ll pick some of my favorites and feature them here on the blog!

I always shoot in auto, since I have no idea how to use my camera on manual. I do manually focus, though ;) I’ll be taking a Digital Photography class my a local professional photographer at our homeschool co-op this fall. I hope that I will be able to get off auto, once I learn a bit more about what I’m doing…

I mostly use manual, but I don’know how to use it to it’s full extent. I also use some of the other modes, occasionally.

    • Once you know the ins and outs of Manual mode, you have no need for even the sports setting for fast little ones. I don’t know everything, but I am hoping to pull in all my lovely photography savvy readers and some pros. :) Look for the entry on how to use manual mode soon!

  3. I am all manual now. When I try to fall back on A-priority, I get frustrated because it will often expose off something that is way dark and usually blow out the photo in return. I’m often taking a shot on manual, looking at my lcd screen and histogram and then tweaking either lighter or darker from there.

Like Hannah, I too have a DSLR Made Easy series on my blog: http://www.lauraradniecki.blogspot – The Rad Life. If you are a beginner, hop on over and check that out too. It is a 10+ part series, covering everything from Aperture and Shutter Speed, ISO, Manual Mode, Night Photography and more. The part I have yet to cover is White Balance!

I know what you mean about the frustration! After shooting, learning, and getting used to manual, you won’t go back.

Yes! Do check my awesome friend Laura’s site out! She is a {way rad} photographer friend of mine and has a wealth of encouragement, photog lessons, and more on her blog. You’ll love her! Thanks, Laura, for throwing your site and tutorials out there!

  4. I only use manual when I have on my new lens, otherwise I’m auto all the time. However, I am REALLY wishing I could learn manual so I can do some new things.

    Just subscribed!

I use manual most of the time. The only time I switch is when taking close-ups of an item, to get extra details and texture of the photo subject.

I recently got my first DSLR and was DETERMINED not to use any auto modes. So far, so good! I’ve been shooting mainly in aperture priority…I too looooove bokeh :)

  7. Dawn Camp says:

The camera I have now doesn’t even have auto modes, so I have to go it manual. I shoot aperture priority most of the time, but when I absolutely can’t nail a shot, I switch to full manual and work with the internal metering. That usually takes care of it. :-)
